Chapter 12

“You did what?” China asked trying to keep her voice down. She glanced over her shoulder periodically trying to keep an ear out for Clay. He would kill her if he knew she spilled the beans to his mother about him being released from the hospital. But she couldn’t help it. She liked Carin, and although she didn’t know the full story behind his dislike for his mother she still felt everyone deserved a second chance.

“I went to the police. I told them what I saw.”

China stood there with her arms folded, her mouth hung slightly open. She was dumbfounded. “But how?”

“I was there, China,” she finally admitted.

“Wait. What!”

“I was there. I’ve been here the entire time. It’s sad to say but I was stalking my own son,” she said with a shrug of her shoulders. She laughed nervously. She knew China must think she is crazy, but she was desperate.

Carin let out a slow and shallow breath as she thought back to that day. She’d been sitting outside China’s house for hours trying to figure out a way she was going to approach her son. She felt the stalking had gone on for long enough, and it was time for her to reach out to him. She didn’t want to waste another minute, she wanted a second chance to do things right. In the blink of an eye it was almost taken away from her. She watched Clay get in the truck, when he stopped at the end of the driveway she thought it was her chance, like God was giving her a sign. She’d just opened her car door when the shots rang out of nowhere.

“So you knew about me all this time?”

“Yes,” Carin said nodding her head.

“Okay, so you were out with your binoculars in hand while everything went down?” China asked. This is weird, China thought to herself.

“Yes, and I’m sorry I didn’t come to help,” Carin quickly blurted out before China could ask. She felt so guilty about never leaving her post, she couldn’t bring herself to see him like that. But she did her duty by calling 911 and she remembered the make, model and license plate of the car the shooter was driving in. She was even able to get a glimpse at him as he drove by. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she thought about that day.

China could only shake her head. This was too unreal, something you would only find in a book or a movie. She wasn’t sure how she should feel, but she was relieved they may finally get some answers, and maybe even some justice. They both grew silent, their thoughts drawn to the same person, Clay.

“Let me go get him,” China finally said, interrupting the silence between them. She knew Clay would be pissed but he deserved to know everything.

“He doesn’t know I’m here?”

“No,” China said with a shrug of her shoulders. “Just have a seat I will be right back.”

“Okay,” Carin said as she sat down and got comfortable.
